FRISCO, Texas – Northwestern State’s Shelton Eppler, McNeese’s BJ Blunt and Southeastern Louisiana’s Ivy Wall are the Southland Conference Players of the Week, the league announced Monday. All weekly awards are presented by MidSouth Bank. Special Teams Player of the Week: Ivy Wall, Southeastern Louisiana – Jr. – Punter – Amite, La.Wall averaged 50.3 yards per punt Saturday against Central Arkansas. He was called upon six times in the outing, blasting four of them for over 50 yards and downing three inside the 10-yard line. Eppler broke single-game records for yards and touchdowns to open Northwestern State’s conference slate with a 49-48 win over Lamar and earn offensive honors. The Demons return to action Sept. 29 they travel to Southeastern. Honorable Mention: Jeremiah Chambers, Abilene Christian; Sully Laiche, Nicholls; Juan Jackson, Central Arkansas. Offensive Player of the Week: Shelton Eppler, Northwestern State – Jr. – Quarterback – Navasota, TexasThe junior quarterback from Navasota cemented himself in Northwestern State history, smashing the single-game record for passing yards (474 yards, a new mark by 93 yards), touchdowns (six) and total offense (469 yards, topping Bobby Hebert’s 465 in 1981). Eppler also tied the Demon mark for points responsible for with 36 in the highest-scoring Southland game in school history. He managed a Demon offense that remained turnover-free through three games. With the game tied at 35 early in the fourth quarter, Eppler produced back-to-back touchdowns on a 70-yard pass to Jazz Ferguson and an eight-play, 68-yard march on the following series to take the 14 point advantage. Honorable Mention: O’Shea Jackson, Northwestern State; Alex Kjellsten, McNeese. Defensive Player of the Week: BJ Blunt, McNeese – Sr. – Linebacker – New Orleans, La.Blunt made his presence known immediately Saturday when he forced a fumble on the opening kickoff that led to a Cowboy touchdown on the very next play just 10 seconds into the game. He added three sacks and four tackles for loss in helping McNeese remain unbeaten through games. The senior linebacker led the Cowboys with nine total tackles, six of those solos, and tacked on a fumble recovery that led to a McNeese field goal. Blunt exploded the “Defense with Attitude” for the Cowboys in a 20-10 victory over No. 12 Nicholls to win the defensive award. McNeese takes on BYU on Saturday at 5 p.m. CT. Wall’s Lions fell 33-25 in their conference opener against No. 17/18 Central Arkansas. Southeastern will continue its search for its first win of the season Saturday in Beaumont, taking on Lamar at 6 p.m. Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots.last_img
